Elevation decides the scope
Above ground, drainage is a solved problem — everything runs downhill to the main. In a basement, the main sewer line leaving your house may be at, or above, the level of your basement floor. If it is, gravity will not carry waste from a basement fixture to it, and no amount of clever pipe routing changes that.
So the first thing we do is establish where the sewer line actually sits relative to the floor. That single measurement determines whether your basement bathroom is a straightforward gravity job or whether it needs an ejector system, and it moves the price meaningfully. Knowing it before design is much better than discovering it during.
Existing rough-ins are a starting point, not a guarantee
A lot of newer houses on the Front Range were built with a basement bathroom rough-in already stubbed into the slab. That is genuinely useful and it saves real money — provided it is where you want the bathroom.
What we check before quoting is location against your intended layout, the elevation it was set at, and whether the vent provision was actually run or just the drain. Roughs that were installed speculatively are not always complete, and it is worth knowing which you have before the design is finalised around it.
Cutting and patching concrete
Where there is no usable existing rough, drainage goes under the slab, which means cutting it. Done properly this is saw-cutting a clean channel, excavating, installing and testing the drainage, having it inspected, then backfilling and patching flush.
It is disruptive for a day or two and completely routine. What is worth insisting on is that the inspection happens before the concrete goes back — because that is the whole point of doing it in that order.

How do I know if my basement already has plumbing rough-in?
Many houses built in the last few decades have a stubbed-in rough for a future bathroom, usually visible as capped pipes in the slab or a shallow depression where the concrete was poured around them. What is less obvious is whether the rough is where you actually want the bathroom, and whether it was set at the right elevation. We locate and verify it before quoting, because finding out afterwards is expensive.
What is a sewage ejector and do I need one?
It is a sealed pit with a pump that lifts waste up to the main sewer line when gravity cannot do it. You need one when the fixtures in the basement sit below the level of the sewer line leaving the house. It requires a sealed basin, a dedicated vent, and electrical power. It is a normal part of many basement bathrooms, and the alternative is not having a bathroom.
Will you have to cut the concrete floor?
If there is no existing rough-in where you want the fixtures, yes. Drain lines run below the slab. We saw-cut cleanly rather than breaking, install the drainage, have it inspected, and then patch. It is dusty for a day and entirely routine.
Can I add a wet bar without a full bathroom?
Yes, and it is a much smaller scope — a sink needs drainage, a vent and supply, but not the drain size or fixture spacing that a bathroom does. The same gravity question applies, though, so where the sewer line sits still determines whether an ejector or a smaller pump system is needed.
Does a basement bathroom need its own vent?
Every fixture needs venting, and in a basement it usually means tying into an existing stack or running a new vent up through the structure. If an ejector pit is involved it needs a dedicated vent of its own. This is one of the main things a rough-in inspection checks.
