The order of operations decides everything
A bathroom is built in a sequence, and every stage covers the one before it permanently. Demolition, then rough-in, then inspection, then waterproofing, then tile, then trim. Nothing in that list can be revisited cheaply once the next thing is on top of it.
That is why we treat rough-in as the deliverable rather than as preparation. Rough-in gets set to the actual fixtures you have chosen, from their actual specification sheets, not to generic dimensions that are approximately right. A freestanding tub filler, a wall-hung toilet, and a linear drain each have their own requirements, and discovering that after the framing is closed is expensive.
Waterproofing is a system, not a product
The most common serious defect we find in residential bathroom work is waterproofing treated as a product you apply rather than a continuous plane you build.
Water will get through tile. Grout is not waterproof and tile assemblies are not designed to be — they are designed to let water reach a membrane that carries it to the drain. So the membrane has to be continuous, it has to be properly bonded and lapped at every change of plane, it has to integrate correctly with the drain assembly, and the surface under it has to slope toward the drain.
Each of those is a place where a shortcut is invisible on the day and expensive in year six.
Venting on relocated fixtures
Every fixture needs a vent, and moving a fixture often moves it out of range of the vent that was serving it. Without proper venting a drain gurgles, drains slowly, and can siphon a trap dry — which is what lets sewer gas into a room. It is an easy thing to get wrong when a fixture moves a few feet, and it is one of the specific things a rough-in inspection is looking for.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Can I move the toilet to the other side of the bathroom?
Usually, but the constraint is drain slope rather than distance in the abstract. Drainage runs on gravity at a specified fall per foot, so the further the toilet moves from the existing stack, the lower the drain has to sit at the far end — and eventually it runs out of room below the floor. On a slab or over a finished ceiling that limit arrives quickly. We check it against your actual floor structure before we quote.
What is a shower pan pre-slope and why does it matter?
Water that gets through tile and grout — and it always does eventually — is meant to reach the drain along the waterproofing membrane underneath. If that membrane is laid flat and the slope is only created in the mortar above it, water sits on the membrane permanently instead of draining. It stays wet, it smells, and it eventually finds a way out. The slope has to be built under the membrane. It is invisible, it is the difference between a shower that lasts twenty years and one that fails in five, and it is skipped constantly.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?
If you are relocating drainage or supply lines, yes. A straight fixture swap in the same locations generally does not. The distinction matters at resale, because unpermitted work that moved plumbing is exactly what a buyer's inspector looks for. We pull the permit as part of the job where one is needed.
How long does the plumbing portion take?
Rough-in is typically two to four days depending on how much is moving, then there is a pause for inspection and for the tile and finish trades, then a day for trim-out and fixture setting. We schedule around the other trades rather than expecting them to schedule around us.
Can you work with my contractor or designer?
Yes, and it goes better when we are involved before the design is final. Fixture selection drives rough-in dimensions, and a wall-hung toilet or a particular shower valve changes what has to happen inside the wall. Bringing us in at design saves changing things after framing.
