Adding a gas appliance is rarely just adding a gas appliance. Every appliance draws from one supply, and the question that decides the price is whether the existing pipe can feed all of them at once.

The calculation happens first

The reason we will not quote a gas addition over the phone is that the honest answer requires arithmetic. Total up the BTU demand of everything on the system — furnace, water heater, range, dryer, fireplace, pool heater, whatever is there — add the new appliance, measure the developed length of pipe to the furthest one, and check the pressure drop.

The result is one of three things. The existing system has capacity, and the job is just a new run. A section is undersized, and part of the system needs upsizing. Or the meter itself is the constraint, which means a conversation with the utility.

All three are workable. What is not workable is finding out which one applies halfway through.

What “upsizing” usually means in practice

People hear that a line needs upsizing and picture the whole house being repiped. Usually it is much narrower than that: one trunk section, from the meter to the first branch, that is now carrying more load than it was originally sized for.

The load calculation tells us exactly which section, so the scope is defined before you agree to it rather than expanding as we go.

Permits and testing, without exception

Gas piping is permitted and inspected work everywhere we operate, and the pressure test has to be held for the inspector before anything is buried or covered. That is not a formality. It is the only point at which anyone independently verifies that the system does not leak.

We pull the permit, we schedule the inspection, and we hold the test. If you have had gas work done previously without a permit, it is worth knowing that it will surface during a home sale.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Why does adding one appliance sometimes mean replacing pipe?

Because gas pipe is sized for total simultaneous demand, not for one appliance at a time. A supply line that comfortably feeds a furnace, water heater and dryer may not maintain adequate pressure at the furthest appliance once a high-BTU range is added. The fix is upsizing the section that is undersized — often not the whole system, just the run that is now carrying more than it was sized for.

How do you work out what size is needed?

By adding up the BTU rating of every appliance on the system, measuring the developed length of pipe to the furthest one, and checking that against the pressure drop tables in the fuel gas code. It is arithmetic, not judgement, and it is why we do it before quoting rather than estimating and adjusting later.

What if my gas meter is the limit?

Then the utility has to be involved, because the meter and the service line belong to them rather than to you. This is not common in residential work but it does happen when several high-demand appliances are added at once. We identify it during the load calculation and tell you early, since utility scheduling is outside our control.

Can I add a gas line for a dryer where there is only electric?

Usually yes. A gas dryer needs a gas line, a shut-off, and appropriate venting, and the electrical requirement drops to a standard outlet rather than a high-amperage circuit. Whether it is straightforward depends on how far the laundry is from existing gas piping and what the load calculation says.

Is flexible gas piping acceptable?

Corrugated stainless tubing is code-compliant and widely used, with specific requirements around bonding and protection from physical damage. Which material we use depends on the run, the location and the jurisdiction. What matters more than the material is that it is sized correctly, supported properly, and tested.
